The exercises that follow have been used for classroom instruction. They are being coverted into electronic format and will be uploaded periodically. The Institute considers them important not only for learning how to interpret Islamic texts, but also for building up material for the project on Ahkam al-Qur'an (see textual sources).

Excercise No. 1: The Verse Dealing with the Offence of Qadhf (False Accusation of Unlawful Sexual Intercourse)

This exercise focuses on literal construction by interpreting a single verse without the help of other evidences. The main idea behind this exercise is to show that the earlier jurists tried to stay as close to the literal meaning of the text as was possible so as to be sure that the intention of the Lawgiver was being identified. Exercise No. 2: The Offence of Zina (Unlawful Sexual Intercourse)

This exercise is designed to bring out certain basic assumptions in usul al-fiqh. The first assumption concerns the theory of abrogation (naskh) and is followed by other important principles. (Download File)

Exercise No. 3: The Texts Dealing with the Prohibition of Riba.
Exercise No. 4: Grave and Sudden Provocation in Islamic Law (Download File)
